About adult ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects around 3–4% of adults in the UK. It is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that interfere with day-to-day functioning. Many adults reach their 30s, 40s or later before being diagnosed, often after years of feeling that they have to work twice as hard as everyone else.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

There is no single test. We follow a NICE-compliant approach using the internationally recognised DIVA-5 interview, based on DSM-5 criteria, alongside the Wender Utah rating scale and the ASRS. The assessment explores current symptoms, how they have impacted your functioning throughout life, your childhood, education and work history, and any co-existing conditions.

Conditions that can look like ADHD

Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, autism, sleep disorders, thyroid problems and the after-effects of trauma can all mimic or coexist with ADHD. A consultant assessment is designed to tell these apart, which is why it takes time.

How is adult ADHD treated?

With the right support, people with ADHD can absolutely thrive. If a diagnosis is made, the same appointment includes a personalised discussion of your options, such as psychoeducation, coaching, lifestyle changes and cognitive behavioural approaches, and your report sets out a clear, personalised treatment plan that your GP can act on.
